Mini Post with a Monthly Mini

It must be nearing the end of this interminable month since I'm seeing the beginning of monthly mini quilts being posted. Wendy at the Constant Quilter encourages us every month with a beautiful mini (or several) of her own, and I'll link to her end of the month post when that comes online.

My mini for the month was actually begun sometime back in 2012 during the Free Motion Quilting Challenge hosted by SewCalGal.  This tiny offering was the better part of a practice piece done that year, now cut down and bound for a 6 inch square mug rug.

The reverse side

I'm happy that a few of the best of the practice pieces from that challenge were saved, albeit in a plastic bag on the floor of the closet, since this kind of intricate free motion quilting is a thing of the past for me.  These days free motion quilting consists of following marked stencils or very forgiving meandering which tend to be easier for my eyes and sore wrists.

So glad this April of Our Discontent is drawing to a close.  May we all be blessed with open businesses and an abundance of warm sunshine in the coming month!

Love your newest mug rug. Not sure which side I prefer as they are both so gorgeous. Sorry to hear about the eye sight and the wrist problem. If only the body would age as slowly as our mind. Take care. ;^)

It has definitely been a long month. I have immersed myself into gardening lately, when it is not raining, which keeps my mind busy with other thoughts. I love your new mug rug!

Nice that you saved a free motion quilting learning piece that could be turned into something useful. I’m sorry though that you aren’t physically able to do more with machine quilting. Most of my quilting practice pieces get turned into pet beds! I sew several of them together, enough to make a sort of large pillowcase, and then hang it off the side of my sewing machine table as a receptacle for threads and fabric trimming. Have to say I’ve given away some pretty pet beds, and I’m grateful us quilters have an area outlet for them. Keep hangin’ in there in quarantine! Personally, I’m not planning to go anywhere any time soon, even when our recreation centers begin to reopen. I don’t think anything good can come out if being in a group situation, even at six feet apart!

Oh, I remember that challenge well. That may even be how I discovered your blog, looking at everyone's monthly projects.
I saved a bunch of my practice pieces, too. That is a great idea to make mugrugs from them. I will have to dig mine out one day and see what I can do with them.
The brown with blue thread is really striking.

Oh wow! I envy your machine quilting talent. I love both sides. Don't think I could choose a favorite. I'll link this in on Thursday. Thanks for another great mini!

It's great that you saved that practice piece and now you can enjoy it often. The best things are pretty and useful at the same time!

Your mini is so pretty. I love how it looks with reverse colors too. Nice work. I’m with you about reopening, but I’m not hoping to open until it’s time. I’d hate for us to all come out just to be told to go back in.

It is excellent and a great idea! i, too, have saved my practice pieces and might check to see if I can make anything from them. I am very thankful for that training!

I wish they would repeat that challenge. It was so informative and fun. Your piece looks great as a mug rug finish.

Your "practice" piece is no longer that. It's a awesome mini that you get to use and enjoy.
