Time for a Mini

It's nearly the end of January, and for probably the first time ever, my monthly mini has been waiting patiently for a couple weeks to make its debut on the blog.

Following up on Janet O.'s "baggie challenge" from last fall, I found another baggie of mostly red and white tiny flying geese,  mostly finished and ready for pressing.  They made up into this placemat size little quilt.

The narrow blue strips separating the columns of geese are leftover 1" strips from cutting the layer cake pieces for the hatchet blocks shown in my previous post here.  Border and binding are from some miscellaneous less-than-a-fat-quarter pieces in the stash.  It all appears a little bit wonky in the photo, just as it does hanging on the design wall - keeping it humble but happy!

Here is the back, made with a found piece of an older toile, bordered with another small piece from the stash.

I've decided that the minis for this year will all be more or less placemat size since there are already more wall size mini/small quilts than we have room to display.  It's always nice to have a new placemat, and some of these may eventually be donated to the local meals-on-wheels office for holiday delivery to their clients, or given as little gifts.   Trying to use up as many scraps and odds and ends as possible this year.

For more mini quilts, check Wendy's blog The Constant Quilter at the end of each month where she posts links to a growing number of mini-makers blog posts.  Thank you Wendy for continuing this Monthly Mini Challenge for yet another year!

Such a cute little mini. Flying geese are so versatile! And great idea about the placemats. I actually want a 'mini' quilt wall someday, but just haven't got the mojo yet to get started. I'm sure there's only so much room regardless.:)

What a wonderful placemat size mini! Love it when these little quilts come together with hardly any effort. I'm working my way through scraps, too!

I love your goal for the year. Our scraps runneth over! Most of my quilts are humble and happy. Your mini is delightful with all those bits and pieces.

Charming mini quilt/placemat. Great job on busting the scrap bags. ;^)

I like the placemat size mini idea, too. In retrospect, I could have made two placemats for my mini(s) this month - duh! The little flying geese are too cute!

Very cute little mini. I brought along my bonus triangles to sew together. Maybe you’ve inspired me to do that next.

What a genius idea to make placemat sized minis. They will be practical and beautiful. I like how you used the toile on the back!

Delightful in every way! I totally agree that placemat size is ever so practical. My old Cape just doesn't have the wall space for all my minis so a lot of them go to new homes over the course of the year. This one is a real treasure. And I love the toiles on the back!

"Waste not want not." That's a worthy goal for any quilter. I am a big fan of flying geese whether they are flying across the sky or flying across your quilts. I love the old toile you used for the back. The backs of your quilts are always wonderful surprises.

Thank you! I love it when the right fabric can make the back as much fun as the front.

Look at all those tiny geese flying in formation! Wonderful! The toile backing is marvelous! Another great mini.
The placemat size is a clever idea.

Isn't it fun to make a mini? Obviously you enjoy it, and it's great how you're using a baggie of "inspiration" to come up with a small design. Tiny flying geese are too cute! I like how you set them too. This place mat would be perfectly enjoyable to use. I "get it" about not making more wall hangings. I already feel like I live in a "padded cell," with all the quilts on our walls! Ha, ha. Hope you're hunkered down for more enjoyable quiltmaking as old man winter throws himself at you!

Very sweet!!! I love doing little quilts to fill in small blank spaces here and there. And using them as placemats is simply brilliant!!!

I can hardly tell you how much I like this little quilt, Pat. It's about as perfect as it can be! I think it would make a great larger quilt, with larger blocks, of course! Congrats on finishing so early. That's always satisfying.

Placemat size is a wonderful idea for a mini quilt. Love all those pretty flying geese of yours among those pretty blue flower strips...so very lovely. That sweet toile as the backing is a fabulous choice.
