Something New

While I finished the Dresden Christmas runner in time for the holidays, the two matching placemats still need the quilting completed and binding attached.  Hopefully there will be a window of time later this week to complete them and put them away for next year.
As hoped, the chunky candlesticks and little angel did a great job of hiding the less-than-stellar machine quilting around the center of the dresden plates, and I've pretty much decided that a redo of those portions can wait - maybe forever!

Meanwhile our almost-6-year-old granddaughter received one of the 18" dolls for Christmas, and since her birthday is coming up in a little over three weeks, we decided she needed a doll bed, bedding and a quilt for her new friend.  So, while my husband works on constructing the bed, I've begun stitching the quilt.  Here is the top which was my New Years Eve project -
I just love this sweet older bear fabric
and the Bear Paw blocks seemed perfect

All the fabrics came from stash and scraps.  That narrow inner border was a short piece of leftover binding - just enough to slice into narrow strips and go around the blocks - I just love when that happens!  There's a piece of 1980s(?) Springs Mills Strawberry Shortcake fabric that will become the back, with hopefully enough of both the bear and Strawberry fabrics left for a couple of matching pillowcases.  I'll be making a mattress, pillow, the pillowcase(s) a sheet, and hopefully a pair of pajamas to complete her little ensemble.  All in pinks - her favorite color.

A good beginning for the year, I think.   We'll have our last family Christmas get together later today, then it will really feel like the new year has begun!

so cute, it will be perfect I am sure for her doll bed. Grandparents are the best I think, maybe we have more time. I hope you will show the furniture your husband makes. Love the table runner. Happy New Year from Iowa, USA

A new holiday tradition, making sure you cover the Dresden centers with something pretty :). I love the way you and your husband took off with ideas for the doll, not just a quilt but everything that doll could possibly hope for. Your granddaughter will treasure them forever.

Awwwww...how cute! Makes me wish my granddaughters and daughter were little again. I have some snippets of Strawberry Shortcake fabric and Holly Hobbie. My daughter still has Strawberry Shortcake and Lemon Forgottherestofhername in her box of old barbies and doll clothes I made when she was little. Granddaughters have most of their things too except I didn't have a talented husband who can make a bed so I made a bed out of a basket that fell apart from so much use! That teddy bear fabric seems even more vintage...maybe 70s??? I have a pile of old teddy fabric in the donation quilt pile.

Oh, and I certainly wouldn't even bother with redoing anything on those dresden centers since they look perfect under the candlesticks and angel.

The table runner looks lovely. It's hard to go back so I don't think I'd bother. The little doll quilt is adorable and will be fun with the rest of the bedding and bed. It will be a treasure for your granddaughter to have.

How festive the first photos are! And lol I made a doll quilt lickety-split when my oldest grand got her first 18 inch doll too! :) I have a feeling I was just as excited as she was about that doll!
