April's Friday Finish

A local nursing home requested some lap quilts from our quilt ministry group, and so that has been our focus over the past month or so.  This is the fourth "opportunity quilt" for the reverse side of that 17 in 2017 list of projects, and my one and only finish for April.
A whole lot of colorful scrappiness, with prints, plaids and dots from every season of the year and some novelty prints thrown in for good measure.  The quilt finished at 40 x 50 inches. And I didn't even make a dent in the huge bags of scraps we have accumulated.

This is the third quilt I've finished using those infamous phone book pages for the strippy block foundations, and it will be my last. Too many hours spent tearing off paper when I could be sewing ... Someone had the idea of trying used dryer sheets as foundations that would not require removal.  I'm thinking of trying that method, and wonder if anyone has made strippy blocks using these?  Seems like as long as they don't fall apart in the laundry they might work well since they're dimensionally stable and very thin.

I'll be making more nursing home quilts toward fall, but for the next few weeks will be working on a much larger project that includes a whole lot of scrappy nine-patch blocks, about 50 or so ...  Yet another opportunity.

So happy that spring has finally arrived and with it the fun of some outdoor quilty photos in the early morning mist.

Happy Friday!

It is a great finish! A nice pattern for unifying lots of scraps.
I hear you on the papers. Though I foundation piece minis now and then, after one full size quilt that needed papers removed, I decided not to do that again. : )

That is a fabulous scrappy design! That is a lot of scrappy nine patches to make. Looking forward to seeing what you do with them.

Oh, I love the quilt. Scrap strings are so fun to sew with. Try using a heavier paper like newspaper end rolls. Easier to pull off if you crumple and spritz with water. It's fun to pick papers off while watching the telly.... for me anyways.

I love that quilt, lots of color and texture. I just finished a string quilt and feel like the pile of scraps didn't change at all, LOL. I use old sheets for the foundation for strings, it adds a little weight to the quilt, but I like that and the sheets are easy to find at the thrift stores for cheap.

I'm not a hugely experienced quilter but I made a string-x quilt (with 8" blocks0 and didn't use papers. It worked out just fine. But then I pressed before cut the final shape.

Your quilt is such fun. It will certainly brighten someone's days!

I love the scrappiness! I think someone once mentioned that the odor from dryer sheets might annoy some people. I use phone book pages and usually pick the papers off while watching TV. I think spring has finally sprung here - it's supposed to get up to 80 this week!

I like how you've used those strings. I'm sure someone in a nursing home will enjoy it. My mom loved the purple (her fav color) quilts they put on her bed when she was in hospice. That says a lot for quilts since my alcoholic mom didn't enjoy much of anything.
